One of the most difficult parts of having a newborn was by far breastfeeding. I really thought it would just come natural, that baby and I would just get into the flow of things and all would be right in the world. Well, I couldn’t have been more mistaken! Breastfeeding was extremely difficult, exhausting and challenging all in one. However, now that I look back, the difficulties only lasted a short time.

Once you get used to it, it really is the best thing for both mommy and baby. The benefits far out way the sacrifice. I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while but never got around to it. Now that Luca is almost one (which was my breastfeeding goal) I decided to sit down and get this up on the blog. Even if it helps one person it’s worth it.

There’s tons of different tips, drinks, vitamins, blogs, videos (I probably read and/or watched them all) on breastfeeding help but these three tips are things I never found anywhere. I just learned them through experience.

1.CHIROPRACTOR. If you’re baby isn’t latching as a newborn try taking him or her to a chiropractor that specializes in infants. I didn’t even know some chiropractors specialized in infants so I ended up finding this out by accident. I had a pinched nerve in my neck after labor and went to my chiropractor. She casually asked me how the baby was doing and I mentioned to her that he wasn’t latching on. The nurses even called him “lazy”. 🙁

She explained to me how the baby, as well as the mother, go through trauma during labor, this sometimes causes the baby to get tight around the jawline, preventing them from latching on correctly or at all. She ended up massaging him around his jaw, spine, and neck and soon after he was latching on easier and easier each time. I’m no expert on the topic but it worked for my son. So if you’re having difficulties getting your baby to latch definitely try this out.

2. COMMUNITY. My friend had her daughter a few days before Luca and she was also determined to breastfeed. We always shared ideas, vented to one another, and just followed-up with each other on how everything was going. She added me to a Facebook group with other new moms who were nursing. It’s a private group where you can ask questions, share concerns, or accomplishments. The group helped me so much! Being connected to a group of women who were also experiencing the same things I was made it that much easier.

3.MIND OVER MATTER. My last tip may seem ridiculous but trust me, the most important advice I can give you is to be determined. You have to make up your mind that this is something you want to do and you will figure out a way to get there. Every day gets easier, and when you see your healthy, growing baby there will be no doubt in your mind that it was all worth it!
